During the Third Shinobi World War, Team Minato was assigned to destroy the Kannabi Bridge. Rin was kidnapped during the course of the mission, and her captors, Iwagakure ninja, tortured her with Kakkō's genjutsu to find out if she knew anything about Konoha's war efforts. Rin  refused to speak, Kakashi and Obito staged a rescue effort, and, although they succeeded, Obito was crushed in a cave-in caused by the fleeing captors. Before he died, he asked Rin to implant his Sharingan into Kakashi's damaged eye. After the procedure was completed, Rin and Kakashi were forced to flee the continuing cave-in, and, with the help of Minato, went on to complete their mission.
Rin's fate after this is unknown. She is assumed to have died, as Kakashi has indicated that all those close to him were dead and the fact that he lamented on how he failed to protect her. This would later be confirmed during Kakashi's dying moments as he was going to see Minato, Obito, and Rin.

Rin was a sweet and friendly girl who cared deeply for her comrades. She shares many similarities with Sakura Haruno, such as their prowess in medical techniques. She also had the same position in the love triangle of her team; Obito had a crush on her, but she had a crush on Kakashi. Her feelings were not as obvious as Sakura's for Sasuke however, but she nevertheless made it a point to help Kakashi whenever she could. She was also much nicer to Obito than Sakura initially was to Naruto, never insulting him and staying by his side for as long as she could during his death. Whenever Kakashi and Obito began arguing, Rin tried to break up the arguments and would not take sides.  

Rin had short, dark-brown hair and bright brown eyes. She also had two purple rectangular markings on each side of her face. She wore a long-sleeved black top, a high waist, light purple skirt apron under which she wore shorts. She also wore a forehead protector, sandals as well as what appeared to be dark stockings that stopped at her thighs. While on missions, it was shown that Rin carried around a backpack instead of a pouch containing her equipment.

As a medical ninja, Rin's primary duty in missions was to give support to her team-mates. Despite her age, she was shown skilled enough to aid a team on a high-ranked mission. She also demonstrated high skill by quickly and successfully implanting Obito's remaining Sharingan into Kakashi with only basic medical tools. Rin's will is incredibly strong as she was able to resist leaking any information when under Kakkō's genjutsu.
